Ok – so I’ve seen about a billion posts, and got a couple emails over the American Idol / iPhone blatant advertising bit last night. I’ve seen all sorts of comments that they couldn’t believe Idol basically shoved the iPhone in front of that many people so flagrantly, blah blah blah.
It was a very blatant "advertising spot". Ryan held the iPhone, basically did the only on AT&T bit, buy songs on iTunes etc … but he didn’t demo it. They had a video in the background showing various things.
Now, the thing I don’t understand is why is everyone so up in arms about it? American Idol has a deal with Apple for buying Idol performances on iTunes. They have had a deal for the past couple years for voting – text to ‘x’ number if you’re an AT&T customer. And they have ALWAYS pitched various products very blatantly, for example the contestants make a Ford commercial every week once they get to the top 12. So really – what’s the big deal? Hell, they even did the same thing last year with the BlackJack if I recall correctly.
So, Ryan was a bit of an ass (as usual when he pitches stuff) but other than that, I didn’t see anything beyond the usual…
Can someone please explain the uproar to me?
