iPhone 2.0 Will Gain Big Corporate Endorsement

The iPhone is set to get another blue-chip endorsement as an ‘enterprise friendly’ device once the 2.0 firmware hits.  Gartner Group, a leading market research firm, has said they will be changing their stance on the iPhone:

Analysts for the firm were among those who expressed concern over some security issues immediately following its release, but in a statement this week said a more enterprise-friendly version of the handset’s firmware and other planned security enhancements warrants an updated recommendation.

Following the release of those improvements as part of iPhone software v2.0 this June, Gartner said it will endorse the handset under ‘appliance-level ‘ support status, which permits the device to be used for PIM, e-mail, telephony and browsing applications. It would also deem the device fit to be used for other dedicated functions where the software is supplied by a third party, functionality is kept to a restricted set, the software supplier offers support for a backup platform, and IT development resources are not needed to program custom code locally residing on the device.

As we saw at the recent iPhone SDK launch event, the three big items that will make corporate IT departments take a good long look at the iPhone are Microsoft ActiveSync and Exchange support, Cisco IPSEC VPN support, and WPA2 WiFi security.

With sources like Gartner giving the iPhone a stamp of approval, it’s going to be very interesting to see how quickly the iPhone may gain some success amongst businesses this summer.  I would imagine one thing that will hold up a lot of potential corporate adopters is the looming question of when a 3G iPhone model will appear.  Connection speeds and the ability to make use of a data connection and still receive calls should be factors that will be deal breakers for some companies.  Maybe another reason why Apple may tell us about when the 3G model will arrive, when they launch firmware 2.0?
