IPSWTool Offers ‘Next Step’ in iPhone Modding

IPSWTool screencap

Just a day after the release of the new Pwnage tool from The iPhone Dev Team, another new tool has been announced, that will be used with Pwnage and make building custom firmwares for the iPhone an easy process with an elegant front-end GUI to work with.

IPSWTool is the next step of building custom firmwares with the style and grace of iLiberty+. With IPSWTool you can create custom firmwares packaged will all the goodies already downloaded and inserted into the IPSW. These custom firmwares can be restored onto iPhones and iTouchs that have already been Pwnd.

The new tool will let you easily add essential and popular iPhone applications via simple checkboxes – things like Installer, the BSD Subsystem, SSH, and an apps pack of BigBoss apps (one of our very favorite sources for great iPhone utilities).  The screenshot above also shows another feature that would be superb – the ability to adjust the OS and Media partition sizes on the iPhone.  This would mean you could make sure that as soon as your custom firmware is installed, you have plenty of room for applications, without having to move ringtones around or anything like that to create additional space.

I am very tempted to give Pwnage a try soon.  The two things holding me back are 1) (touch wood) My iPhone is in just such a beautiful state at the moment.  Running 1.1.4 with a Ziphone jailbreak applied and running a number of great apps, loving my current theme etc.  2) I just haven’t read enough yet on the Pwnage process and how to apply it with best chances of success.  I want to feel confident that my iPhone will continue to be activated and happy after the process.

TimeCapsule – the excellent iPhone backup application – makes me feel I can save a lot of time and hassle if I do decide to re-do things again with Pwnage.  I feel comfortable that things like Notes, webclips, Installer sources, and more can be restored quite nicely – since I have copied these across to my Mac.

When IPSWTool is out and I learn a little more about pwnage and maybe see some easier ways of making or acquiring custom firmwares to use with it, I’ll likely have a go at it.

By the way, for any of you who are wondering where the name of this new tool comes from, or why IPSW is in there, it’s a reference to the file extension used for all iPhone firmware files – .ipsw.

IPSWTool has been developed by Thephoneproject and The iPhone Dev-Team, and is due to be out ‘soon’.  I get the impression we should see it in the next few days …
