Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center

Way off topic here, but had a great Sunday visiting the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center here in Austin.  We had never been, and my wife and daughter were very keen to see the place.  I thought I’d sort of be along for the ride, that a wildflower center wouldn’t really knock my socks off. Wrong, very wrong.  The place is spectacular.

Every inch of the place is a testament to Ladybird’s devotion to conservationist principles – principles which she championed way before they were receiving anything like the attention they do now.  And it’s just gorgeous to be in – with beautiful trails to walk, galleries for viewing big, open, Texas sort of spaces, and of course some amazing examples of native regional flowers and plants.

Apologies for being probably the world’s worst photographer – but there are a few more iPhone pics after the break, just because I found it such a superb place to visit …

If you ever find yourself in the Austin area, I highly recommend finding some time to visit the Wildflower Center.  It’s a great way to spend a few hours.  Here’s just a little slice of an Intro to it:

Decades ago, Mrs. Johnson recognized that our country was losing its natural landscapes and its natural beauty. As much as 30 percent of the world ‘s native flora is at risk of extinction. The Wildflower Center was intended to help preserve and restore that beauty and the biological richness of North America. Since then, the Center has become one of the country ‘s most credible research institutions and effective advocates for native plants.

See HERE for all the details on it …
