Boy Raised By Wolves Shocked by iPhone’s Shortcomings

Tim Hillebrand – a Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine expert blogger – has written a post over at Mobility Site titled ‘A Stranger in a Strange Land: a Windows Mobile guy meets iPhone‘ which sets out to show how ‘shocked’ the author was when trying out his brother’s iPhone and discovering all the things it just could not do.

Somehow – despite being an expert blogger in the smartphone and mobile arena – Hillebrand had remained completely unaware of many of the most talked about and well-known missing features on the iPhone.  He was stunned that he could not use a stylus on it.  Amazed to learn it did not have built-in GPS or slots for add-on storage cards.  Dumbfounded that it lacked IR to beam contacts across to his Windows Mobile device.  Astounded that you can’t use a USB connector with it – and downright shocked that web apps are the only programs offered via Apple for use on the iPhone.   And so on, I think you can get the gist.

The article includes some clear inaccuracies – like claiming there are no productivty apps for spreadsheet or document editing for the iPhone, no ebook readers etc. – along with the staged and stilted revealing of the many missing features.   I think my favorite part though is this little patch:

That ‘s when we learned that styli do not work on the iPhone screen, which seems to require heat from your finger. I wondered if you can use iPhones outside in the winter. You can ‘t use them with gloves either.

Oops.  He went from wondering about using the iPhone in wintertime to quite clearly stating that it won’t work with gloves – almost as if there was no real surprise and shock there at all.

I’m looking forward to more ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’ type posts soon – maybe one penned by a boy raised by wolves, who will be utterly blown away that there is no copy and paste on the iPhone …
