The soon- to-be-released moleskine app for the iPhone lets you create folders and sub-folders, and bring some organization to your iPhone notes …

Do you find the built-in iPhone Notes program pretty limited?  Ever wish you could get your iPhone notes organized?  Group them in some logical way, rather than just live with the default listing of notes arranged by most recently created – place them in folders and make them easier to find and work with?  Then you’re going to like the soon-to-be-released moleskine app, a lot probably!

moleskine has been developed by Databinge, makers of the TimeCapsule iPhone backup application and the WildEyes iPhone document viewer program.   moleskine is a great idea, and should be a big hit, because it addresses another real weak area in the standard iPhone software.  This will replace the built-in Notes app for many people I imagine.

Here’s are some of the things you can do with moleskine now:

  • Create folders and sub-folders for your notes
  • Choose (and edit later if desired) the name for your notes – no more having to worry about using a first line that works ok as a title
  • Use its own note editor for creation and editing of notes
  • Add descriptions to folders and sub-folders, and show these when viewing the folder structure and browsing your notes
  • Assign icons to your folders, to help differentiate your topic areas at a glance – at the moment, there are colored folders, animals, and insects as icon sets – more are being developed prior to release of the app

Databinge is also planning to add the ability to email your notes, and back them up via TimeCapsule, very soon – probably by the time it is released.

Here’s a look at the moleskine notes editor:

Some things that would be nice to see in future versions of moleskine are:

  • Some options on how you want your notes folders sorted – right now they just show in the order they were created – would be good to be able to choose to sort by name for example
  • An ability to import existing notes created with the built-in Notes app
  • An auto-capitalize of letters at the beginning of a new line, or after a ‘.’ is typed – as the Notes app does
  • An X that clears all existing text when editing the name of folders or notes, so you don’t have to backspace one character at a time

I’m very glad to see a new note-taking application for the iPhone.  Databinge has a very impressive record of providing frequent and substantial updates to their other iPhone programs, so I feel optimistic that we may see moleskine improve and become a more and more powerful Notes program quite quickly.

moleskine should be released ‘in a few days’ – and we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as it does.  In the meantime, you may want to check out Databinge’s announcement post HERE and offer your comments and suggestions on this promising new app …
