Handwriting Recognition for the iPhone!

HWPen handwriting recognition app for iPhone

Wow – this is something I’ve been wanting to see for quite a while.  A Chinese developer has released HWPen – a handwriting recognition app for the iPhone.

It offers handwriting recognition in Latin and Chinese.  The screencap above shows the ‘writing area’ for HWPen – which works pretty much like most letter recognizer apps I’ve seen.  You need to enter letters within the left half of the work area, and numbers on the right.  I’m not quite sure about how to dictate when a letter is capitalized and when it’s lowercase yet – have only played with it for a few minutes.

My initial impression is that yeah, this is a very early beta and is quite awkward to use so far.  It feels like it will take *a lot* of practice to make it really usable – though that may be more to do with having to use a finger to enter characters.  If this or other handwriting recognition apps take off, it might be worth investing in a specialist stylus to use with it.  I know – everybody hates the stylus – but I still find them handy for just *one* purpose – taking quick notes.

I’ll definitely be practicing some more with this one.  You can give it a go by adding this source to Installer:
