Use http://iappcat.com/ to create your custom repository. This way you won’t have to manually look for every app in the installer…

I’m going to talk to hc (the TimeCapsule developer) a bit about Sources restore options – I may be missing something. If not, then yes – this is a big missing area that could’ve been a big timesaver. It was still hugely useful to put back Safari and Maps bookmarks, Notes etc. I am hoping I’ll get webclips worked out today as well.

As for Pwnage Tool generally, I think it is very worthwhile. There is a lot to be said I think for now being able to ‘restore’ directly via iTunes to a custom firmware. I also like the idea (assuming it proves true) that once you use it, you’re all set for when iPhone 2.0 firmware is launched.

Overall here’s what this taught me:

We need a backup tool. One that does what Sprite/Spb backup does and reliably. I imaged the same thing you did with Time capsule – restore of my sources. If it doesn’t do that then its a huge amount of lost value. Granted the Safari thing is cool, SMS, etc … but a restore through iTunes does most of this as well – I really wanted it to backup/restore the stuff that iTunes can’t/won’t do.

I don’t need pwnage … Yet. Maybe if I switch carriers. But right now I don’t see that anything beyond jailbreak is what I need. I can see a big use for this in a couple years when maybe you just want to use the iPhone as an iPod Touch – but for me this tool is massive overkill. I’m on AT&T – not likely to leave them.

I’m glad I didn’t rush right out and try pwnage. It seems like a great tool – just not the right one for me and my needs right now.
