The first iPhone video recording program that records audio as well as video has been launched today. It’s called iPhone Video Recorder and developed by DreamCatcher.
Here are some of its features:
- Record both audio and video
- Record to compressed mpeg4 format
- Intelligent dynamic volume adjustment algorithm
- Up to 15 fps with high-quality video
- Playback, send out by email
I’ve been trying this one out for a short while just now – after a heads-up from dezign999 (thank you). So far, the compression rate seems very impressive. I’m limited to 30-second recordings for now as I’m not paid up, but the file sizes are much smaller than I’ve seen when using ShowTime. The app’s price is $19.99, which is steep, especially while it is a ‘jailbreak app’. If you pay up, you get unlimited recording time – well, limited only by the amount of free space on your iPhone that is, and with this app’s compression rate, that will allow for an awful lot of video.
Sound quality is ropy but tolerable. Overall, this seems promising – quality-wise, this does not seem like a candidate for uploading things to YouTube or similar, but does seem perfectly usable for capturing little moments on the fly and sharing them. Hopefully the quality will be improved in future versions. The encoding (which you can choose to start automatically or delay and invoke manually) is pretty quick, and emailing the files to myself was easy, and the files do play just fine on the Mac, first time.
Read on for more details and some of the FAQ section from the developer’s site …
Here are some of the FAQs on key topics from the DreamCatcher site:
Where can we find the recorded files?
For firmware 1.1.2 or below: /private/var/root/Media/iPhoneVideoRecorder
For firmware 1.1.3 and 1.1.4: /private/var/mobile/Media/iPhoneVideoRecorder
How long does it take to encode a recording file?
Encoding time takes double of recording time or so.
Does it resume recording while a phone call is coming?
No, but what you recorded has been saved.
How long can iPhone Video Recorder record?
iPhone Video Recorder can consecutively record for as long as you like provided that your iPhone disc has enough space. One-hour-continuous-recording will be a 60MB file.
How to transfer it to my computer?
You can send it out by email, and then you can receive it on any computer.
What are the iPhone firmware support?
All 1.0.x and 1.1.x versions.
Do I have to pay for the upgrades?
No! All upgrades are free to registered users.
You can find iPhone Video Recorder on Installer now. You’ll need to add the DreamCatcher source, which is:

Wonder when we’ll get to see how uShow compares to this one, and maybe what updates ShowTime has got coming down the pipe …
