Twitxr is a new application that’s entering into the very crowded and competitive photo-sharing / micro-blogging / social networking categories. Its service is described like so:
Twitxr is a services that allows you to stay connected with your family and friends. With twitxr you can share a moment, a picture, a thought, instantly with your mobile phone. Where are and what are you doing your friends now? Twitxr tells you.
Sadly, my first reaction to that is a jaded sort of ‘oh, another one’ – but I am a sucker for new apps, and especially for those with possible social networking benefits (meaning those that promise to make things quicker / easier in these areas). One of the things that caught my eye with Twitxr (apart from the odd name) was its promise to make it easy to update several services at once – like Twiitter, Facebook, Flickr etc.
That one feature may still make Twitxr worth a longer look at some point – but so far Twitxr – at least on the iPhone – has just completely turned me off. Here’s why:
It fails to remember my login credentials. So every single time I open it I see this lovely screen:

Then, when I do try to enter my credentials, even if I don’t get all the way through entering a password, it goes straight into my home screen successfully – so it is keeping the credentials, but still throwing up the error. Not cool.
I’ve also found that more often than not when I try to do an update / post with it, after entering text in its Location field, it refuses to pop the keyboard up for the next field, the actual update text.
And it frequently crashes back to the home screen during attempts to enter update text or in other places within the app.
Twitxr’s UI is also just sort of bland and clumsy feeling all the way around.
Now – to be fair, this is an early beta of Twitxr for the iPhone, and I did not give it much of a chance once I encountered the problems mentioned above. Then again, it strikes me that if you’re going to throw your hat in the ring in a hugely crowded and competitive area like the one Twitxr is entering, you should have private beta tested and QAed and polished up this baby to the Nth degree before letting it make its way to Installer.
There’s too many other cool tools out there for sharing pics and sending ‘my life’ updates to spend a lot of time working out how to make this one cooperate. That’s my quick reaction anyway. If anyone has got this working a treat for them and want to share why it’s compelling, I’m anxious to hear about it …
