moleskine Gets A Big Update – Adds Voice Notes, Themes & Lots More

 moleskinev037b2 iPhone notes app

moleskine – the iPhone notes program that allows you to organize your notes and goes way beyond the built-in notes app’s abilities – has just had another major update, with a number of great new features added.

My favorite new addition is that you can now add voice notes.  It’s excellent to be able to create a folder for a particular subject, and then create both text and voice notes within it.  Camera / video notes are due to be implemented in a future version soon as well.

Another of the best new features is the ability to re-order your top-level notes folders. Previously, these were shown in the order they were created and you couldn’t change it.  Now you simply tap on the top status bar to toggle on and off the ability to re-order them using the iPhone’s standard drag bars.

This update contains A LOT of additions and changes.  Here is the full list of additions:

* voice notes recording
* added cassette icons to the theme
* animate audio and camera button
* 2-finger tap (on the same row)/slide on the browser view to toggle maximise/minimize browser (use 1 finger to scroll)
* localization : French version is available (with French theme shortly at sosiphone.com)
* sorting addedmoleskinev037b2 iPhone notes app
* tap on status bar when in full browsing mode to toggle rearranging (status bar will turn orange)
* tap on status bar when in full editting mode to toggle auto-capitalization
* shake to go back to the previous view
* last note edited is saved if user exit directly by pressing HOME button
* on exit, a backup is created

For the full list of other changes, see Databinge’s page HERE.

Another addition that I’ve really enjoyed so far are the ability to just tilt the iPhone slightly (or shake it) to go back one level in moleskine’s views.  So for instance if you are viewing an individual note and you shake the phone, you move up to the folder containing that note.  Tilt or shake the phone again and you’ll move back to the top-level showing all your folders.  I also quite like being able to tap just above the bottom status bar within a note to invoke and hide the keyboard.

Also released by Databinge today were a set of additional themes for moleskine – a Sports theme, an Elements theme, and a Leaves theme.  These give you quite a few more icons to choose from for your notes and folders.

There are a few things that struck me today as items that I’d most like to see improved upon soon:

The ability to email a note, or even a folder, should be added ASAP.  Especially now that you can add voice notes, this should really be an option.

Some of the interface elements would benefit from being consistent throughout the app.  For example, that tap on the top status bar to toggle on and off re-ordering only works at the very top level.  It would be good if the same thing could be done at the individual folder, or sub-folder levels.

The app is getting to where it has so many features and ways to interact with it, that it should really have a Help or Tour sort of section to let users know how to use some of the features.  There are a couple of them that I found hard to discover on my own – so I think an overview of them would be a big help.

I thought moleskine was a very promising app right from when it was first launched, and I’m glad to see it’s more than living up to expectations.  This is a very useful note-taking and organizing program, and it just keeps getting better.

This newest version of moleskine is v0.37b2 and is available on Installer now.  You may need to add the Databinge source to ensure that you see this version without delay:
