Installer Updated – Now Lets You Search for Apps

Tick.  Cross off one wish list item for Installer improvements.  It was updated this afternoon – and you can now search for applications!

There’s a search bar (as seen in the screencap above) for each application category.  It is a wee bit awkward though in that you have to have selected a category to see the search bar – would be even nicer if it was implemented at top level, before you even choose a category.

Also, it seems to search only for items you have not already installed, instead of returning all applications that exist in all the repos – or at least my initial results look this way.  As in, if I search for moleskine, I do not get the program itself or several of the themes for it in the results (because I have them installed) – I only see a couple of new themes for it that I’ve not yet added.  This seems less than ideal to me.  I think sometimes I’d like to search for an app and see its location just to tell a friend where to find it, for example, and would prefer to see the results include even things I have already installed.

Those are pretty small gripes though – overall I’m quite glad to see the search functionality added.

You should get prompted to run the update next time you launch Installer …

Now all they need is a little alphabetical list done the side that you can use to navigate, just like in contacts.

    erm…
If you go to Install section the first folder is “All Packages”. Enter it and you can then search ALL non-installed packages, and returned results will have the containing folder. No need to go BY SPECIFIC folder to search for apps.
