Orb is a pretty neat free service for streaming your media and files to almost anywhere you can get a connection. It can hook up to a variety of devices by just running off of your PC and then streaming the content you specify. You can then log on using another PC, your WM device, or even your Xbox360 to access your media wirelessly.
To set it up just download the PC version here (you have to use the US version if you want to stream to your iPhone), install it, make an account (very quick to set up), and then specify the folders you want Orb to watch for content. Then try logging on using another supported device (now including iPhones, woot!) and say "look ma, no wires!". The access can be as public or as private as you want it to be, so you can control who gets to access your stuff.
I used Orb on my Axim x51v while I was studying in Germany last summer. I would stream episodes of Samurai Jack from my computer in Canada to my PDA in Germany via wi-fi. The episodes played through perfectly. How freaking cool is that?!
With Orb now available on the iPhone I can just imagine the possibilities. The interface is still pretty basic, but it’s showing quite a lot of promise. I’ve already tried streaming music and video to my iPhone and it’s all working out pretty well so far.
OrbLive is now available on Installer, get it now! 😀
