The open iPhone is already happening without Apple endorsing it … may as well go all the way and give customers what they want.

Healthy competition has to be a good thing. That’s the point I was making here more than anything else. More choice, more options for people means you’ll be seeing more iPhones. This is a critical juncture for Apple and the iPhone, especially with RIM launching the new BOLD and a new touchscreen ‘Thunder’ device coming down the pipes as well. As they say, ‘It’s on!!!’

Why do I get the impression that the author has no idea whether the exclusive carrier deals are good or bad, or whether the exclusivity aspect of these agreements was stipulated by Apple, or stipulated by the participating carrier(s)?
