There is mounting speculation that the upcoming 3G iPhone will be an evolutionary step forward rather than a huge leap.
According to a new Piper Jaffray research note the 3G iPhone will not be a reinvention of the product. That will have to wait until early 2009.
Rather, the 3G iPhone will be similar in almost all regards with the exception of a thicker (and plastic?) case, necessary to house the 3G chipset and/or a thicker battery to mitigate the battery drain of the high speed chip.
All that will change come January when, as Piper senior analyst Gene Munster put it
"We expect more dramatic changes with the expansion of the iPhone family to multiple models and price points…"
Munster went on to say that the new 2.0 iPhone software will not create an entirely new experience but will be evolutionary in nature and that it looks increasingly likely that Apple may either accept pre-orders for the new iPhone on or about June 9th or ship it without the Version 2.0 software initially.
So the question is this… since the Gen2 software is also coming to the iPhone "Classic", is high speed data enough to make you upgrade?
If not, what MUST the new iPhone have in order for you to eBay your current iPhone?
Personally I think he is way underestimating the impact the new software will have.
Resident versions of GoogleReader, eReader, Evernote and eWallet will be KILLER!
Moreover, I am hoping the 3G iPhone will bump up capacity to 32GB and finally give us some useful Bluetooth for stereo headphones and using a keyboard.
With June 9th fast approaching we’ll know soon enough.
