Tepid results.

First, Google only allows for a full contact name – and Address Book contains first, last and title. Holy mother of all duplicate contacts Batman….

Second, making a backup of Google Contacts is advisable. Good luck restoring them back if you goof up. For some bizarre reason Google only allows you to delete 20 contacts at a time. Go ahead and try to restore your old Google contacts – but they won’t overwrite the contacts – they just merge themselves in there. Why Google doesn’t have an “overwrite everything” option is way beyond me.

I’m still not sure how I am going to resolve this.

I tried using Spanning Sync beta 2. It sorta kinda works if you disable calendar sync, then do a contact sync. But for me both won’t work at the same time. Knowing that Apple just released the contact sync as part of their OS UG — my guess is that Spanning Sync really pushed this one out the door too quickly.

Other sites have mentioned that the ability to sync contacts to Google only appears if you have ever synced up an iPhone or Touch. Lifehacker has a workaround posted.

Personally I think this is huge news. I am also waiting for GMAIL to become fully push on the iPhone. So far everyone is looking at me as if I just parked my spaceship outside their house and walked inside dressed as a klingon.

Ye of little faith – just wait. This IS going to put hurt on Microsoft.

Once all these Google tidbits sync up effortlessly (calendar, contacts, notes) — they’ll have a nice little MS Exchange Killer on their hands.

Go ahead and laugh, everyone else is. Come find me in a year though and tell me how wrong I was! 🙂
