Sketches has long been one of the most popular jailbreak apps for the iPhone – offering a simple and fun drawing package that lets you draw with your fingers on a blank page, using free-form lines or pre-made shapes, and even letting you create and combine your drawings with photos stored on the iPhone.
Now Ars Tecnica are reporting that the program has been getting a *huge* overhaul and is going to be ready to go for the App Store. The changes sound very exciting:
Compared to the bare bones features you may have played with in the original version of Sketches, the application that the team at LateNiteSoft will selling on the Apple App Store is nigh unrecognizable.
The LateNiteSoft guys showed us the current incarnation of Sketches; the UI is as polished as any Delicious Generation application. The main screen is a cork board, which has all of the sketches you’ve created tacked up with pushpins. When you start a new drawing, you can choose from a wide variety of backgrounds, including a paper or leather texture, a solid color, a photo from your library, a photo you snap from your camera, a map (centered using Core Location), or even a web page.
They’ve added the ability to zoom in on sections of the images and annotate in smaller increments that allow for the creation of more detailed drawings than any person could create at a full 100 percent zoom.
In addition to the basic geometric shapes that you could place on your drawings in the jailbroken equivalent, the team has added a whole library of vector shapes you can place, rotate, and scale using multi-touch actions. These include speech bubbles, mustaches, hats, cartoonish Apple hardware, holiday symbols, and more.
No details on pricing yet apparently for Sketches – but the general description of how that may pan out sounds perfectly resonable – with the developers saying it should be: affordable for the average iPhone user and priced according to the scope of the application.
For me, Sketches has always been quite an impressive app right from its first release, and has steadily added some neat additional features over recent months – but this upcoming App Store version sounds tremendous. I’m really looking forward to seeing this one in all its new App Store glory …
