We’ve known for quite a while now that there is no easy or Apple-supported way to securely erase all your personal data from an iPhone, and ensu
re that it can’t be uncovered by a future owner of a lost or sold or stolen iPhone.
This has been en especially big concern for many folks who are looking at selling their V1 iPhones in the lead-up to the launch of the new iPhone 3G.
Now iPhone security guru Jonathan Zdziarski has released a method that will allow a good, secure wipe for the iPhone, for those who are willing to make the effort. The method is not at all for the faint-of-heart, requires jailbreaking the iPhone, and is quite time consuming ("perhaps an hour or two if you get good at it") – but is nonetheless very welcome to see.
See Zdziarski’s page HERE for full instructions. There’s also a mention of a system sector wipe tool available from the BigBoss source that may help to accomplish some or all of this process. You’ll want to note the big warnings on the data wipe methods as well – the author of course provides no guarantees on the method, and advises that it could lead to completely trashing your phone.
