Since 2003, Apple has reached some pretty impressive milestones in regards to the iTunes Store. In the last two years alone, Apple has sold its one-billionth song, three-billionth song, and become the most popular music retailer in the US, surpassing Wal-Mart, with 19 percent of the market. Today, Apple has announced another milestone: five billion songs sold since the store’s inception.
While four billion songs sold in two years, three months, and 27 days (since the day Apple announced its one-billionth song sold) seems impressive, you get a real appreciation for the number when you consider that’s almost five million songs purchased every day (4,722,550) over that time.
Those are just some amazing numbers for iTunes and sales of songs via an Ars Technica report today – and in such a relatively short period of time too.
This has got me thinking a little on what sort of numbers we may end up seeing for apps sold (and apps distributed, including free ones) once the iPhone App Store gets up and running. Well, I should say – I have no number-crunching sort of thoughts, with variables on how many iPhones will get out in the hands of users and what percentage of users actually even think to add programs and so on. I don’t know anywhere near enough of the facts and figures to make intelligent guesses along those lines.
But … I do have a very strong feeling that these numbers may end up being pretty staggering and amazing as well. I think there’s huge excitement and demand for great iPhone apps, and from everything we’ve seen at Apple WWDC demos and elsewhere, there is a huge amount of great development going on.
The iPhone from Day One has just felt like a device that everyone wants to *do* so much more with. Not just listen to your iPod music collection or keep up with email – but really take hold of all its lovely computing power and big screen and do powerful things with it.
I know some people will never add a single app and just use what is built in – but I really think we will see the App Store be massively popular overall, and racking up some great numbers for Apple in its own right.
What do you all think?
