Briefcase Will Bring iPhone Wireless Sync to The App Store

Wireless file transfer between iPhone and computer is one of the killer jailbreak apps that so many of us have enjoyed for all these months – via OpenSSH, DropCopy and other jailbreak offerings.

This is a type of program I was not particularly expecting to see show up in the App Store anytime soon – but apparently a company called Hey Mac Software has got one coming along quite nicely.  Their app is called Briefcase, and will use Apple’s Bonjour networking technology to allow transfers with a Mac using SSH.

Once connected, you can use the bottom toolbar to complete whatever transferring tasks you want. You can get a file, browse the files currently on the iPhone, look at the activity and get information on the computer you are currently connected to. briefcasetoolbar

When you click to see the files on your iPhone, you have several options. You can upload the file to the remote computer—whether it’s to the Desktop, Downloads folder or Documents folder. You can also view the image on your iPhone or set the desktop background of the remote computer to the image you are looking at.

The features listing on the Hey Mac Software page for Briefcase includes this listing for it:

  • Download Files – connect to, browse, and securely download files and directories – Mac apps, media files, PDFs and other documents – from any Mac that has "Remote Login" enabled.
  • Preview these files on your iPhone.
  • Share them with another Mac user.
  • Manage Files – manage local briefcase files, including viewing/playback support for some file types.
  • Upload Files – securely upload files stored in Briefcase to another Mac and perform functions specific to the file type: set an image file as a desktop background or copy a file to the documents directory, for example.

Briefcase sounds quite good, and wireless file transfer should certainly continue to be a very popular ability for lots of users.  The app is due to be out in the Fall of this year and will cost $5 in the App Store …
