iPhone 2G Battery Life Disappoints – Will 3G Be Any Better?

Will the iPhone 3G Battery Life By Any Better?

Over the past month or so, I’ve noticed a steady decline in the performance and life of my iPhone battery. A little disappointing to say the least. It seems I can’t go any more than 2 days without charging my iPhone up again… where as when I first picked up the unit, I could go 4, 5, maybe even a week without charging depending on how heavily it was used.

This got me to thinking… What are the specs on the new iPhone 3G battery anyway? I certainly hope it packs in a much improved battery… I’m getting a little tired of charging this darn thing!

So lets take a look at the new iPhone 3G battery specs:

iPhone 3G Battery Specs:

Talk time: Up to 5 hours on 3G / Up to 10 hours on 2G
Standby time:
Up to 300 hours
Internet use:
Up to 5 hours on 3G / Up to 6 hours on Wi-Fi
Video playback: Up to 7 hours
Audio playback:
Up to 24 hours

Compare those numbers above to the original 2G battery life estimates of 5 hours of talktime on 2G, and 16 hours of audio playback, you can see that the battery issue has been addressed. With the 3G you’ll get double the talk time (if you’re still on 2G) and an 8 hour increase in audio playback time. We can only assume and extrapolate that all other factors have increased to a similar degree as well.

Of course, I would expect the usual slowdown in performance and life of the battery. I guarantee that when you pick up you iPhone 3G in July (or win one) that in a years time you have a pretty good shot at griping about the drop in battery performance… Lets hope for the opposite though 🙂

  • I have to confess, after only using the iPhone 3G for a day, I can only account for that day’s events. Still the battery life has been impressive compared to the iPhone 2G. Only 20% used in a day considering my heavy usage in the first day.

Maybe its just after using the iPhone 2G for a year, I’m used to the crap battery life / daily charge lifestyle.

  • Sure the battery on iPhone 3G is not that great, but what can we do? We want small size phones, powerful features and lengthy battery life.

Just get a backup battery. I got mine from iPhoneck brands. Their new 3G backup battery is probably one of the better looking products in the market. Their website is http://www.iphoneck.com

I have a 2G and used for a year. I am a big user. All day long, txt, emails, internet, phone. Then I purchased a 3G to upgrade. I was very dissatisfied and return the phone due to the poor battery life. They need to fix that problem. It was a true deal breaker for me and I am back to my old iphone in hopes that they will fix the problem with the next Iphone release.

i have a 2g iphone. i found that the battery life is unstable. a friend told me that it would improve battery life when you go into your settings and go into mail, contacts, calendars and turn fetch new data off. i did it and now i get about two days of use without it dying on me.

  • I got a refurb 3gs, battery life totally bites. If I use anything–type an email, listen to a few minutes of tunes, whatever, battery life cascades from 99% to 85% in no time flat. Then if I don’t charge it, indicator shows life don’t to 65% in less than 2 hours. In fact, after charging all night, and just from being on this site and typing this note, I’ve gone from 100% down to 95%! Pretty annoying and a big issue for me since I’m untethered most of the day.
