Even more useful would be a concise set of tests that could be repeated for new iPhone releases, as well as for others to duplicate, in order to determine specific device battery capacity or device drain issues.

I have considered doing this since having my iPhone 4 replaced due to failure, and observing abysmal battery life since. Unfortunately, the replacement was at 4.3.0 and cannot be downgraded to the same version as my previous iPhone 4 (4.2.1), so direct comparison is impossible.

Until we collectively craft the Rossetta Stone of battery usage, the truth of what features between the different software releases most affect battery life will remain a mystery.

I have had the 3GS a week now. I did notice a slight improvement in battery life after 3 full discharge-recharge cycles. But the battery is still not performing well.

As of now, i have 9.00 hrs of standby with 3hrs11min usage, almost all of it surfing over wifi, the rest two short 2G calls and a few sms. 3G, location services and BT are off and i don't auto check any email accounts. Battery is now 63%. When i surf over 3G i can see the batterylevel literally dropping. I will bring it to Apple.

I have purchased some USB cables for charging my phone that do not work as expected.

Are there any apps that you know of that provide more detailed stats on the iPhone? It would be great if someone came out with something like Coconut Battery for the Mac which provides very detailed info about your battery such as # of cycles its gone thru and current capacity against original capacity.

Can’t wait for part 2. I’ve been curious about the 3G and battery life. I have used 3G a whole lot as of yet, having wifi in the house and my workplace is out of 3G range. Keep up the good work!
