The iPhone is due to hit the world’s fastest-growing mobile market, India… on Friday.
The 3G will sell for more than triple the US price in India. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar will sell the new iPhone for 31,000 rupees (or around $712 USD) for the 8GB model. The 16GB model will go for 36,100 rupees.
The higher price in India can be easily explained. In the US and other countries, carriers subsidize the phones by tying the customer to those long, 2 or 3 year subscriptions. The carriers make the money back and more during that period. Indian carriers have no such service ‘lockdowns’.
At last count, more than 200,000 people have already pre-registered for the iPhone. Considering the massive population over there, I’m not sure if that’s an impressive number or not… But one thing is for certain… In the coming months the iPhone is going to be more global than ever.
