Let's Rock Event Roundup

The lights are off, all of the reporters and live-bloggers have gone home to hunch in front of their laptops… So that can only mean one thing… It’s time for a roundup of today’s ‘Let’s Rock’ Event! If you’re big into music, movies and any sort of digital download for that matter, chances are you’ll want to take note of the new iPod’s and iTunes 8. Let’s get started…

Of the less-important news, the iPod Shuffle now comes in 4 colors… And Apple is also now selling in-ear headphones with in-line volume control. They look purty nice, but I think I’ll hold off on purchasing them for now. They go for $79.

iTunes 8 has dropped. Inside is a new ‘Genius’ playlist function (I’ll have to explore this), new HD TV show support and a bunch more. I haven’t seen the new software on the Apple site yet. Just tried a software update as well and nothing is available yet, but look for it real soon.

The new iPod Nano is thinner and has a new more beveled shape. It has a completely new OS with cover flow, a shake-to-shuffle feature (COOL) and a built-in ‘Genius’ playlist. There’s a new range of colors to choose from, and the Nano even has a built-in accelerometer. $149 for 8GB and $199 for 16GB.

A new iPod Touch features a new shiny looking case which has a tremendous form-factor. There is external volume controls, a built-in speaker and more. There’s also integrated Nike+ iPod functionality which should be a hit for all of those joggers out there (pronounced ‘yog-gers’… ok, kidding). $229 for 8GB, $299 for 16GB, $399 for 32GB.

The iPod Classic now comes in a 120GB model. This replaces the 80GB and 160GB models. You’ll pay $249 for it… If you need all that hard drive space for your movies and music, the classic will still be the way to go over the touch.

Last but certainly not least was the announcement of the iPhone Firmware version 2.1. The new Firmware promises to offer vastly improved battery life. On top of that faster backups, fewer dropped calls (should there be any in the first place!?), and fewer crashes are also promised.

I’m keeping my wallet in my pocket before I shell out for any of the new products. Besides, I suppose I really don’t need a new iPod at the moment. If anything the new iPod Touch looks of interest to me. Especially now since they’re really trying to position it as a gaming device.

All in all, not a bad event today! What do you think?
