The most popular version of the new iPhone 3G, the 8GB model, is getting harder and harder to find. As I write this only a few are left in the entire state of California, and no 8GB iPhones can be found in Denver, Boston, Chicago or Miami either. In New York, the only store that still has some is the glass cube on Fifth Avenue.
Why the low supply? Some think that Apple has diverted the supply to Best Buy stores. Best Buy started carrying the iPhone in around 1,000 stores in early September. Others think that because Apple has generated a whole new batch of first-time buyers, these newbies feel comfortable with the lower $199 pricetag. Either that, or Apple is slowing production on the 8GB unit in preparation for an upgrade. 16GB for the price of the 8GB would be nice!
The 16GB models are still available in most stores.
