Unlocked iPhones on Sale in Hong Kong

Apple has begun selling unlocked iPhone 3Gs in Hong Kong. Despite any announcements it has been reported that they any-network iPhone 8GB model costs $5,400 HK ($692), whilst the 16GB costs $6,200 HK ($794). These unlocked iPhones can be activated with a SIM card from any carrier which must be installed prior to syncing with iTunes.

In most countries the iPhone is on sale through a designated carrier and without illegally unlocking the iPhone, it will only work with the SIM card it was purchased with, preventing its use on any other network.

The South China Morning Post has also reported that Apple will release a ‘stripped-down’ version of the iPhone for China that will lose 3G and Wifi connectivity, in favor of their local 3G standard ‘TD-SCDMA’.

The iPhone 3G is also due for release in Russia on October 3rd. It is reported it will be released with a choice of three Russian carriers — Vimplecom, MegaFon and MTS and is available without a contract.
