Flash Coming to the iPhone via the App Store?

Look out App Store, Here Comes Flash?

Look out App Store, Here Comes Flash?

Flash Magazine is reporting on a statement made by Adobe’s Sr. Director of Engineering Paul Betlem during the Flash on the Beach Conference. Betlem gave additional information to reporters regarding Adobe’s Chief Executive Shantanu Narayen comments way back in March. Narayen said Adobe planned to develop a Flash player of the iPhone and release it through the App Store.

Betlem goes on to say that the arrival of Flash for iPhone depends entirely on Apple’s approval. Apple’s Steve Jobs has said in the past that a full version of Flash would not run well on the iPhone.

“My team is working on Flash on the iPhone, but it’s a closed platform.” He noted that Apple makes all the decisions, so in other words, the ball is in Apple’s yard at this time.

I think the main thing holding Flash from coming to iPhone is political tensions between the two companies, not necessarily technical problems or challenges. As John Gruber said in his blog Daring Fireball

“… Apple will not publish a Flash player for the iPhone unless and until there exists some other mobile phone that (a) does run Flash, and (b) starts taking sales away from the iPhone. Which, my guess is, means never. Apple has no motivation to allow it.”

Do you think Apple will allow Flash to come to the iPhone? Leave a comment!
