Japan’s iPhone carrier Softbank Mobile has signed up their first large iPhone 3G contract. The deal was set with technology consultancy BearingPoint, and will put 1,000 iPhones into the hands of the company’s analysts and workers all around the country.
BearingPoint has said it is taking on the iPhone with the goal of improving productivity and access to information. Currently, all of their consultants carry a cell and data modem card for a PC. Not optimal.
This new deal with BearingPoint could be a catalyst for change for traditionally risk-averse Japanese corporations. Adoption of devices geared more towards business such as the BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices has been very, very slow in the country.
The iPhone 3G went on sale in Japan along with a lot of other countries on July 11. There were the typical lines and waiting lists in the country, but now those are gone. With the addition of a first big corporate contract, hopefully other businesses will give the iPhone or another powerful smartphone device a chance to help them improve the productivity of their workforce.
