Over Half of Cars in 2009 Will Feature iPod Connectivity

Love to drive? Love your iPod? Looks like you’re not alone. The auto manufacturers have more and more been building iPod connectivity into their vehicles, and next year this will reach an all-time high.

Over half of the 2009 model year cars sold in the US will offer at the very least optional support for the iPod. Automakers are trying more and more to increase sales by offering cool add-ons and technological features that set them apart from the rest.

In 2008 only 39% of vehicles shipped in the US had some sort of iPod compatibility. A forecasted jump to 58% is expected for the 2009 model year.

This is all great news… But my question is this. With the iPod becoming somewhat stale and ‘done’…

(note Steve Wozniak’s comments on the iPod the other day: “The iPod has sort of lived a long life at number one…Things like, that if you look back to transistor radios and Walkmans, they kind of die out after a while…It’s kind of like everyone has got one or two or three. You get to a point when they are on display everywhere, they get real cheap and they are not selling as much…”)

When will a) the iPod become extinct, and b) the iPhone become the all-in-one device that automakers and other manufacturers build to accomodate? 5 years? 10 years?

C’mon people talk to me. Leave a comment.
