There have been a few concerns about the new MacBook and MacBook Pro lineups.
First of all, some have a problem with the glossy screen on the new MBP. For me, personally I love the glossy screen, but I work in a dark environment. I could see typical office and business settings causing glare issues wih the glossy screen. Second, the removal of FireWire from the 13″ MacBook has raised quite a ka-fuffle.
When asked by email about editing home videos on the latest MacBook, his Steveness merely said ‘Actually, all of the new HD camcorders of the past few years use USB 2.’
Ok. Point taken. But there are still a lot of firewire devices out there that will be out of luck on the new MacBook. Thankfully, most hard drives and other peripherals that you buy come with multiple cables… USB, Firewire, etc… So the removal of FireWire may not be as big a deal as we make it out to be.
If you look back over the last few years, FireWire has actually slowly been on the outs. Apple got rid of it from the iPod lineup many years ago… And the proliferation of USB 2 must have made the decision at Apple a little bit easier… And he move might have been made in part to nudge users into a higher end Mac for their needs…
If you need to do a lot of video or audio editing, chances are you’re going to be on a MacBook Pro or Mac Pro anyway. I can’t speak from experience on the new lineup of MacBooks, but I know the previous version wasn’t exactly ideal for video and audio production. The lineup needed a little more beef to it. At least that’s my take.
Need FireWire? Get a MacBook Pro, Mac Pro or iMac. Problem solved.
