Annual Worldwide Newton Conference Announced

I hope someone remembers this reference!

Anyone remember this reference?

Remember the Newton? The device was somewhat ahead of its time in my opinion, but was killed by Steve Jobs in 1997. The timing wasn’t right. The Newton however still remains a favorite among small circles. Much like ‘Zoolander‘ and ‘The Breakfast Club‘, the Newton has become a ‘cult classic’ that simply won’t die. These same fans will now have a place to get together and discuss their Newton-ness at the first Annual Worldwide Newton Conference 2009.

The Newton was launched in 1993 as a ‘personal digital assistant’, and paved the way for such devices as the Palm Pilot, Handspring Visor and many more. Even though the device is sorely out of date, die-hard users still hack the thing to let them play MP3s, use WiFi networks and more.

The first ever 3-day conference is scheduled for July 31 to August 2, 2009. Location? Downtown Vancouver, Canada. Check out the conference website for tentative topics that will be covered. Registration is open, and only costs $55 plus your accommodations.

I know people in Vancouver… Sheesh, maybe I should go? I think I may pick up a Newton for myself just so I can attend 😛
