New Mac Mini or Discontinued?

Are Apple soon to unveil a new Mac Mini or have they discontinued the low-end Mac? According to Gizmodo, Apple have discontinued their worst selling system — their European retail sources have informed them that they are unable to order any more of the Mini and have been told not to expect any in the future.

The Mac Mini that was introduced in January 2005 was labeled by Steve Jobs as the ‘most affordable Mac, ever’. It was the cheap alternative to the Mac Pro for Windows switchers wishing to keep their PC peripherals like, monitor, keyboard and mouse. However the Mini turned out to be a poor seller, just like its predecessor – the Cube.

As the iMac and Macbooks became more and more popular, the Mac Mini was disappearing in to the background and it seems, according to Gizmodo, we have now seen the end of this system.

Current Mac Mini users anticipating an upgrade will be highly disappointed if the Mini is indeed discontinued. The latest Mini is the November 2007 model which is now very much outdated.

This may also mean that we see the birth of a new Mac system. Maybe a consumer desktop? However with the success of the new MacBook selling like hot cakes, it doesn’t seem promising.
