Issues Arise with iPhone 2.2 Firmware

Posted on 22 Nov 2008 by Killian Bell

Yesterday Apple made the new iPhone 2.2 firmware available to download through iTunes. The new firmware boasts Google Street View in Maps, podcast downloading, changes to Safari and a bit more. However it also comes with some bugs, and not just one or two.

Since the firmware has become available, many users have reported issues like; third-party applications no longer working, connection issues when trying to access the internet, SIM card & PIN issues, e-mail account issues in Mail and more.

If you have experinced issues with third-party applications, it has been advised that if you uninstall the application and then install it again, it may work. If this fails, you will need to wait until an update becomes available from the developer. I have experience this issue with the DigiDrummer Lite application that our own Mr Mayor did a post on recently — when I load the application up, it just crashes and I have to exit. I have tried removing the application and installing again through iTunes but it still won’t work. At the moment, this is the only application I’ve had issues with.

Other issues include having a PIN lock activated mysteriously and a ‘SIM card not inserted’ error which requires users to remove their SIM, restore the iPhone in iTunes and then insert the SIM again. This is a big issue for me. I work miles away from home and I live in the middle of nowhere. If I break down in my car, I would be in a difficult situation if all of a sudden my iPhone gave me a ‘SIM card not inserted error’. With no access to a computer or iTunes, my iPhone becomes worthless. I’m yet to experience this error however I’m firmly touching wood now.

For some, when trying to access the internet with 3G a ‘Could Not Connect To Internet’ error appers. It is believed that turning off 3G and then turning it back on again solves this issue.

The last issue at the moment is with Mail, particularly for users with AOL accounts. If you have an AOL account set up and you’re unable to delete e-mails, you will need to try and reconfigure your e-mail settings. This can be done by going to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> (your account) -> Advanced -> Delete Mailbox and then set the e-mails to be deleted ‘On My iPhone’ or ‘On the Server,’ depending on whether you’re using a POP or IMAP account.

It is said that the vast majority of iPhone users are using the 2.2 firmware without any of these issues quite happily. Other than the third-party apps issue, the 2.2 firmware has been quite kind to me. If you’re experiencing any issues and have maybe had to downgrade to 2.1, please leave us a comment!

iPhone 2.2 Update promptly killed my 3G connection. A Major c*** up.

However it was rescued through many resets including network settings.

Until then phone worked, slow GPRS internet worked, wireless worked but 3G didn’t.

Now I have discovered a new problem in the iPhone 2.2 update with regard to wireless.

If I connect to my home wireless access point the iPhone switches to wireless icon and uses wireless access for mail / safari / itunes, etc.

However if I connect on the road to my ad-hoc wireless network, the iPhone 2.2 says it joined but the icon remains 3G. Accessing the mail / safari / itunes, etc. still works so its still going over 3G instead of wireless to my ad-hoc network. Another c*** up.

Hmmm… that’s interesting! Thanks for letting us know.

I hope for you sake and for the sake of many, many other iPhone users Apple releases an update SOON!

AOL….Do people still use this? Of course they would be having problems.

  4. Joseph Awad says:

I had to reenter my secure wireless network setting at work after upgrading. It wiped all settings other than my home Apple wireless. That may explain part of the first post.

  5. Leland says:

    No problems for me.

  6. Paul says:

    No problems here either.

  7. Ted says:

No problems here. But Safari doesn’t seem that much better at not crashing. I think I might backup and restore the phone completely just to get a fresh install. I also have a bunch of useless apps that I’ve let accumulate and I might as well prune those at the same time.

@ dggraphics — I still use an AOL e-mail. I’ve been with AOL since I had internet (years and years ago) and they’ve always been great for me. Out of all of my e-mail accounts on the iPhone (MobileMe, Yahoo!, AOL, GoogleMail) AOL is probably the most reliable. I have more connection errors with the others, MobileMe especially, than I do with AOL.

@ Ted — My Safari browser doesn’t seem too much better either — it still crashes just as much. I do find though that removing any unused applications certainly speeds up the phone. I often remove any I don’t use every couple off months because I have a build-up of applications I’ve downloaded mainly because they were free and that I never use.

Hi, I updated to 2.2, and it says SIM not recognized or something. Shall I go to the phone company store?

  10. chris says:

2.2 firware updat killed the middle of my screen, not responsive to any touching and the phone keys 7, 8 ,9 will not work so i can’t dial numbers with 7, 8, 9.
iphone won’t see my wireless access point, and can’t send sms text because the send button is in the dead zone of the screen.

and at&t won’t replace it. that is BS.

DOES ANY ONE THINK I HAVE A LAW SUIT.
I MEAN ITS APPLE’S CRAP FIRMWARE THAT DID THIS. I STILL HAVE A YEAR ON MY CONTRACT AND THE THING DOESN’T WORK. THE LADY FROM 1-800-MYIPHONE IS BASICLY TELLING ME IT MY FAULT AND FOR 200.00$ THEY CAN HOOK ME UP WITH A NEW PHONE,……….YA OK UP YOURS JOBS.

  12. MaryRose says:

I recently bought an iPhone and 14 days after buying it 2.2 was released. I clicked update and halfway through updating to 2.2 the iPhone went blank and an error message displayed on the screen saying this iphone is now in recovery mode and I must resotre it. I did so and halfway through restoring it the same thing happened. I am now stuck with a completely dead iPhone that wont switch on or do anything! Iv been onto apple care and tried everything they’ve told me to do but to no avail. Anyone ever heard of this?

  13. Killian Bell says:

@ Chris — Maybe try downgrading back to the 2.1 firmware just to be sure it is definitely the 2.2 firmware that’s causing this? Either way, I’m not sure where you should go from here. Hopefully 2.1 will restore you iPhone back to health however if it doesn’t work, I’m not sure what you can do I’m afraid.

@ MaryRose — I’ve never heard of this I’m sorry to say. The only thing I can suggest is, go back to an Apple store and insist THEY restore it on one of their machines whilst you’re there. If they themselves can’t get it working, they should replace it.

  14. Hiliana says:

My 1st gen iphone crashed when updating to 2.2 firmware. The screen had the usb cable and itunes icons and that is as far as it would go.When trying to restore, I would get error messages. I did a lot of research and found this article to fix my phone http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
