I’ve been waiting for this for awhile now. As you can guess, I often get iPhone app review requests from developers all around the globe. ‘Comping’ me a copy of an app was a bit of a conveluded process. iTunes gift certificates could be purchased, but because I’m in Canada and have a Canadian iTunes account, that didn’t work so well. Money could be sent via Paypal or other means, but that can be a bit sticky too. Often I’ve just gone ahead and purchased the app… it simply worked out easier. Anyways, now thanks to a new move from Apple it looks like the troubles I’ve had in the past will be long gone.
Apple has now added the ability for developers to generate promo codes that can be redeemed directly at the App Store. While this is all good (woohoo!), there are some limitations that still have me grumbling. At the moment the codes will only work in the US iTunes store… and there is a limit of 50 codes per app. Developers might not like that, but all they have to do to get a fresh roll of 50 codes is release an update. Promo codes will expire after 4 weeks.
This is a great first move by Apple to allow developers to get their apps out there being reviewed by bloggers and editors around the globe. No longer will they be out of pocket to offer up promo apps… and the reviewers themselves should have an easier time as well.
I’ll be completely satisfied once the promo codes will work via the Canadian App Store. Till then… I’m going to sit here pensively tapping my watch. C’mon Apple… I’m waiting.
