I just had a look at the dev-team’s blog and there’s an update worth posting methinks:

” 3G Unlock

We have been working hard on a few other things. The main one being the 3G unlock codenamed “yellowsn0w”. This is now completed and is currently being packaged into a user-friendly application with the simplicity that you see in QuickPwn or BootNeuter.

* The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.

* This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.

* You can tell what version baseband you have by going to Settings->General->About->Modem Firmware

* The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone. It’ll be installable via Cydia and so it doesn’t matter if you have a Mac or PC.

* Please refrain from updating your baseband, regardless of what version you’re at. We’ll have complete directions on New Year’s Eve.

* We’ll stream a live demo of the unlock before Christmas (see the update at the end of this post)”

so good news for all un-official network users.

I may just wait it out as well. Never know when one might need to switch networks.

Yes all unlocks are only relevant to those who wish to use another network provider’s SIM card in their iPhone. If you’re on O2, or any other legitimate iPhone network, and you wish to STAY on that network for the foreseeable, there’s no need to worry about unlocking at all.

Which means, just like me, you can go ahead and use the QuickPwn software with no worries.

With regards to having a 2.1 jailbreak already — just have a good read of the iPhone-Dev Team’s website. I’m sure there was something about iPhones that are already jailbroken. The link is in the post above.

Thanks.

I have a quick question:
I too have a iPhone 3g on an O2 contract. I’m not looking to switch till the end of the contract.

just to clariy: is the soft unlock only relevant for those looking to use unofficial providers?

oh and my iPhone’s already jailbroken at 2.1, would that make a difference?

It allows you to run multiple applications at once, which in my opinion breaks one of the biggest leashes on the jailed iPhone OS. That, and of course Terminal.app together can bring iPhone to its full usable potential.
