Faulty NVIDIA Chips on New MacBook Pro?

Apple’s new aluminum MacBook Pro is believed to have been fitted with a faulty graphics chip according to The Inquirer. In July NVIDIA reported manufacturing defects with the chip, however it was thought these issues were resolved. A “thorough” analysis was carried out on the 9600 graphics chip however The Inquirer believes the revised chips still contain similar defects.

“So, what does this all mean? It suggests that there are 15-inch Macbook Pros being sold with ‘bad bumps’, the same materials that brought down so many HP, Dell and Apple parts, both laptop and desktop. For some odd reason, Nvidia really does not want you to know this.”

Mike Hara from NVIDIA denied the allegations and commented:

“The GeForce 9600 GPU in the MacBook Pro does not have bad bumps. The material set (combination of under fill and bump) that is being used is similar to the material set that has been shipped in 100s of millions of chip sets by the world’s largest semiconductor company.”

MacRumors points out that this “bad bump” could be the cause of the “black screen of death” that many unibody MacBook Pro adoptors have reported. An Apple Support Discussion on the subject highlights a handful of users who have experienced this issue.

Are you a unibody MacBook Pro owner who has experienced this issue? Please leave us a comment and let us know.
