iPhones for Students? University of Cologne Wants to Say YES 45,000 Times

When I was in school, I would have killed for a device as handy as the iPhone. I don’t care how you do it, increase tuition costs, make it a mandatory buy… but having the iPhone as an educational tool and aid is a great idea in my opinion. Putting that idea to practice is what the University of Cologne in Germany has in mind.

André Bresges, a physics professor at said university is spearheading an initiative to get the iPhone into all 45,000 of its students (that’s 90,000 hands).

The strange thing is that professor Bresges doesn’t quite know why he wants the iPhones yet. He doesn’t know the best use or how to use them at all. I find that strange. He has called on students and faculty to come up with their own ideas on how to use the phone. He’s a physics professor, heck, he must have some ideas!?

Here are a few… How about providing course notes and materials in an iPhone optimized format for viewing wherever you happen to be? How about streaming videos and webcasts of classes for students to study from and watch, even when they can’t make a class? How about using them to make presentations more fun and interactive?

All of you faithful readers must have some ideas too, no? Why don’t you leave a comment and let me know what YOU think the best use of the iPhone at the University of Cologne would be. Surely the parents and students themselves will appreciate the increased tuition costs should this whole thing go through 😛
