Tweetie is a very slick looking (and acting) iPhone Twitter application, and my new favorite in this category
It’s been a fair while since I’ve found an iPhone app in an established category (one where I’ve already tried one or more apps and have a clear preferred choice) that became an instant hit with me and knocked off an existing favorite.
That’s the case for me with Tweetie, an iPhone Twitter client. I have been a fan of Twinkle ever since its launch back in the jailbreak arena, but so far (and admittedly I have only been using Tweetie for a short while) Tweetie tops it.
I find Tweetie’s interface cleaner and nicer to use. I also like that all of its features are tied directly to my Twitter account, not to its own network. What I mean by that is that, for example, it gives me quick, easy access to lists of who I follow and who follows me, rather than a listing of friends within the Twinkle network. This just seems less hassle to me – let everything be related to the main Twitter account I say.
Navigating through the application is very easy, as is composing a message, or adding a photo to it. Tweetie lets you work with multiple Twitter accounts, gives you separate tabs for all tweets, @ replies, and direct messages, and uses your location (if you allow it) for several functions, including a view of ‘Nearby’ tweeterers. This is all pretty standard / expected / demanded stuff by now for iPhone Twitter apps, but it’s all well executed and cleanly done.
It’s got a heap of other nice features. I’ll throw a bullet point list of those from their iTunes description down below, but one I like quite a bit is that it shows you "Trends’ (and lets you do custom searches):
I’m assuming this is pulling Twitter data on the hottest current keywords – and may help you discover some interesting threads / people you wouldn’t have normally come across.
Here’s that bigger features list:
- Handle multiple Twitter accounts
- View your timeline, replies, and direct messages
- Manage your favorite tweets
- Browse your friends and followers
- Reply directly to tweets
- Send direct messages
- Follow and un-follow people
- Navigate reply chains
- Inline web browser
- Inline image viewer
- Unparalleled scrolling performance
- Post links with automatic link shrinking
- Upload pictures to twitpic
- Update your Twitter location
- Uses secure connection (https)
- View Twitter trends and perform custom searches
- Nearby searching
- Adjustable font size
That’s a seriously strong list of features.
My experience so far with Tweetie has been superb. I’m loving this app. Anybody else enjoying this one?
Tweetie is available in the App Store, priced at $2.99.
