Snapture Labs Announces Camera Flash Unit For (jailbroken, 2G?) iPhone

SnaptureFlashLogo Snapture Labs has introduced the Snapture Flash, a camera flash unit for the iPhone.    Amongst its many features are a Xenon flash unit, which they claim is 100 times brighter than an ordinary LED-based flash.

The Snapture Flash also boasts over 1000 flashes on a single charge, along with a built-in low-light detection feature to automatically trigger the flash.  The unit is based on an enclosure case design – meaning that your iPhone slips into the case that holds the flash unit – making the Snapture Flash an attractive carrying case for your iPhone as well.   The case features speakerphone amplification, which is a great feature in its own right.

The bad news, however, is that the unit currently only works with jailbroken iPhones; likely because the flash is triggered by Snapture’s software – which isn’t available through the App Store.   One would imagine that there is some sort of official Apple restriction in accessing hardware connected through the docking port as well.   Adding to the potential woes is that there is no mention of compatibility with the iPhone 3G – indeed, the photo we were provided showed an original 2G iPhone.

Snapture did not announce a price for the Snapture Flash, and as they are currently seeking manufacturing partners, it seems that it will be some time before it is available for purchase.
