Truphone Set to Bring Skype to the iPhone

Truphone iPhone app

Truphone “ the mobile VOIP application provider “ is set to update their iPhone app next Monday, adding support for Skype and several other well-known messaging services.  Exciting stuff, as Dan over at WOIP explains:

Within the next week and a half, on both the iPhone and the iPod Touch, the Truphone application will include IM using Google Talk, Microsoft, Skype, and Yahoo.  It will incorporate the ability to Twitter, and allow access for voice calls using both Skype and Google Talk. All of that means that the ability to use the application to make free WiFi calls jumps from the hundreds of thousands to the millions of potential recipients.

When the update comes out, you ‘ll be able to make and receive Skype calls, make use of IM via Skype and Google Talk, and interact with Twitter as well.

Techcrunch has a good post up about Truphone ‘s upcoming changes.  I agree with their thought that the objective for Truphone is to become your go-to all-around messaging program, keep you in the app as long as they can, and earn more as you make more calls through a Truphone account.

Dan from WOIP also scooped an interview with the CEO of Truphone.  It ‘s a very good read.  Here ‘s a little excerpt, a response to Dan ‘s asking why Truphone has focused quite a bit on the iPhone and updated their offering for it so frequently:

Geraldine’s answer was quite clear — first and foremost she noted that, and I quote, ‘we believe the world changed when the iPhone came out and especially when the app store opened. ‘ (Here at woip we could not agree more.) She went on to note that the iPhone is not a "mobile" device, but rather a data device with mobile access. (ditto) The iPhone has, in her opinion, turned users into data users and "WiFi hunters". People want to use data on an IPhone (and by extension the iPod Touch) in a way that they have not previously wanted to use data on a handheld.

Truphone is available as a free app (separate versions for iPHone and iPod Touch) in the App Store.
