iWork '09 Hands On

Okay, so I went ahead and got iWork ’09 and can’t wait to share the features with you.  Just like the older versions when you open the program you are presented with the themes available for creating your document.  There are tons more themes available for this round of software and they look great.  Now this wasn’t the most exciting of announcements made this keynote, but it’s the only one that is readily available.  One of the great new features of Pages is full-screen mode.  If you are getting distracted by iChat windows or updating your Facebook every minute then all you do is hit the full-screen button and then the document is viewed to the fullest and black bars surround the uncovered areas.

Keynote features some amazing new slides for transitions that give your presentation that pop.  Also Apple released the Keynote Remote for the iPhone/iPod Touch.  This allows you to switch slides and in vertical mode it displays the current slide and any notes you have, but in horizontal mode it shows the current and the next slide and to switch the slides is in the flick of your finger.  I personally have never used Numbers, not even in the ’08 edition, so I can’t really tell you whats new about that.

The most exciting feature is the announcement of the iWork website, iWork.com, for use with the iWork suite.  If you have ever used Google Docs, then this is somewhat similar. The site holds your documents in a cloud for you to send to other contributors.  When they get the e-mail and open the online document they can view it just like if they were using Pages, Keynote, or Numbers.  If they want to make changes they simply click the download button and they can download the file as a Keynote, PDF, or Powerpoint document.  This is great for businesses and for getting someone to proof-read your documents.  Now I have tried it and you get 1GB of storage for the Beta, but Phil noted that when out of Beta it will cost money.

I think that wraps up the new iWork features, I say give it a try and take advantage of the 30-day trial.  Now I’m just sitting back waiting for iLife ’09 to come out!
