iPhone Soccer Apps Do Not Appeal (and I’m a big soccer fan)

Posted on 12 Jan 2009 by PatrickJ

I’m a huge soccer fan (still never feels right calling it that, instead of football). Have been for many years and I particularly enjoy following the English Premier League, the Spanish top flight, Serie A, The Champions League, and internationals. So I’m a good target user for a cool iPhone app focused on this sport.

Despite all that, a series of apps that’s been recently released to the App Store does not appeal to me at all. iLiverpool is one of several in the series that I saw released over the weekend (there are others for supporters of Manchester United, Corinthians, Flamengo and possibly more). Here’s the description for iLiverpool on its App Store page:

iLiverpool was made for the Liverpool F.C. soccer team supporters around the world. iLiverpool provides a great summary of information related to soccer team including: – Championship results – Club historical information – Team profile – Noted Players and Coaches – Records of matches and goals – Stadiums – Information about organized supporters – Rivalries *****Also, the application has the COOLEST feature that allows you to listen to the Liverpool Crowd singing. Play it to your friends! It plays loud and clear so you can play it for everyone to hear.***** Have iLiverpool in the pocket and share your Liverpool knowledge with your friends. Have fun with iLiverpool!

So for just under two dollars, the program will give me the same information (or possibly weaker, I haven’t tried it out) I could get from a decent Wikipedia page on Liverpool (or any of the clubs covered). The crowd singing (its so-called ‘coolest’ feature) might take a little more Googling to find, but would hardly be difficult – and who needs it anyway.

I think there’s probably some potential for a well-done XYZ club supporter type app, but for me this one isn’t it. Maybe something with good quality wallpapers for your team of choice, frequently updated player and club news, highlights videos and such. That would attract me much more than this static sounding effort.

That’s just my quick thoughts though. If these sound like a winner for your tastes you can find iLiverpool and others in the App Store now for $1.99.

Have you tried Football 09? I think it’s, by far, the best soccer app available so far.

piblondin – I haven’t yet. Just had a very quick look at its App Store entry – the one in French right?

  3. piblondin says:

Yeah, unfortunately, it’s only in French right now, which limits its potential audience. However, it is an excellent app.

  4. PatrickJ says:

Had another quick look – my French is just about non-existent, but think it offers latest scores and news for leagues in France, England, Spain, Italy etc.

Sounds a little more promising – maybe an English version somewhere down the road?

I liked the new program of Soccer Links & Database. There are champions of the major tournaments and the current calendars.

Can I mention a soccer App. iSoccerStatz. It's an iPhone App for soccer coaches who want to record stats/events for their team as the game is played. Like goal, assist, freekicks, corners, time played, subs etc. It's produced by Statzpack who build performance analysis Apps for Soccer / Football.
