There are plenty of blue-chip and tech-savvy companies (and some not so much) that have sussed the iPhone / App Store phenomenon and have brought out some slick and useful apps for the iPhone OS. Amazon are just one that springs to mind for me – they had a very nicely iPhone optimized site in the days before the App Store, and now have a native app as well. Chipotle – the restaurant chain – are one of the latest ones to get some positive attention for their new iPhone app that lets you order your burrito right on your favorite mobile device.
There are even more who have so far missed the boat it seems, and Sarah Perez has a good post up at Read Write Web calling out a few companies who really could do with having an iPhone app …
A funny thing happened on the way to the airport. I searched through the iTunes App Store on my iPhone for a Southwest app that allowed for flight check-ins, only to find that it didn’t exist. I don’t know why I expected it to be there, but I did. Southwest is one of those companies that seems so “with it” when it comes to this digital age we live in.
The article highlights some great examples of companies you’d really expect to have a good application out there for the iPhone by now, that still don’t – the big shipping / parcel delivery companies, more newspapers, and major retailers are just a few of the examples given.
The post also talks about some of the companies that are getting it right in terms of iPhone apps.
It’s a good topic – especially as we continue to get swamped with bizarre and useless apps in the App Store. It would be splendid to see some of the suggestions in Sarah’s post get taken up by the companies mentioned, and I’m sure there are tons more that we all can think of that we’d like to see in the App Store sometime soon.
In the meantime, the RWW post is well worth a read, and you can find it HERE …
