iShoot has proved not just a highly popular iPhone game in the App Store, but also a big financial success for its developer, Ethan Nicholas – allowing him to quit his day job.
Spurred on by the introduction of a free, ‘demo’ version (iShoot Lite), the full application has shot to the top of the charts for Paid Apps.
Supposedly, at least 10,000 downloads per day are required to reach the top spot of the Top Paid Apps section, and iShoot has been there for several days now. 10,000 downloads of iShoot per day translates into $21,000 of revenue (after Apple’s cut), so even a few days at the top of the list can earn a developer over $100,000. In the case of iShoot, the only additional marketing was the Lite version, so the return on Nicholas’ time has been high.
One of the most interesting things about Nicholas’ story is that he developed iShoot in his spare time, and without having any prior experience with Obective-C …
so more features and applications will be coming now that he has the time to devote to programming
iShoot, which was still at the top of the Paid Apps list as of this past Saturday (Jan. 17th), is decribed as:
iShoot is an artillery combat game in which tanks blast each other with a wide range of high-powered weapons, from basic shells and cluster bombs to the world-destroying Shiva Bomb.
The full version of iShoot includes 25 weapons, photorealistic landscapes, drivable tanks, and more money with which to buy weapons.
Nice to see an iPhone dev success story. I’m hoping our man Brandon is going to be one of these real soon 🙂
