DAY TWO:
A quick call to AT&T to get my International Roaming up and running was successful (interesting that they had to determine my "eligibility" – it’s hard to believe that they’d pass up a chance for $1.29 a minute from ANYONE – but hey, it’s a bad credit market, so…).
The only real question is voicemails — when I disabled airplane mode to see if I could hit the network, the voicemail badge came up — but blank. I presume that was because it determined that I had voicemail but that I turned airplane mode back on before it could download them — leaving me to wonder if voicemails are downloaded ONLY over the cellular data connection and never WiFi. I also ponder the question: How much data does a typical voicemail constitute — or more to the point, how much would a voicemail cost me? Whatever — at least I know I can make a call in an emergency without having to locate WiFi. They told me the potential charges: $1.29/min for calls, $0.02/KB for data, $0.10/$0.50 to receive/send text messages. Thankfully, Skype and email-to-text gateways cover most of these needs. I may use Skype to call my voicemail later – only $0.02/minute to do that!
Incidentally, I forgot to mention how useless British Airways’ App Store app is. No gate numbers?! For shame!
The boss gave me an OK to use the iPhone a bit – so nervously I disabled airplane mode and waited for my voicemails to stream in so I could see how much data they represented (I reset statistics immediately before). And guess what? Nothing. They haven’t apparently downloaded – perhaps because I have data roaming disabled. That’s my theory – and it also dovetails nicely with my theory that voicemails are only downloaded over cellular data, never WiFi.
