Twitter seems like a really cool service “ but it might not be for me. I signed up for it because Cali Lewis from Geekbrief.tv was so psyched about the whole thing that I was eventually infected by her enthusiasm. She talked about how fantastic the whole community was, how quickly answers were given, and how quick and easy it was to use.
In my excitement I went to all my friends and tried to get them to join with me. I explained Twitter as a ‘imagine if Facebook was just the Facebook status ‘ service, but none of them chose to even try it out. They all stuck with Facebook. Every Facebooking one of them. Bah, who needs friends anyway?! I eventually found Twinkle on the App Store and decided I ‘d use the iPhone as my sole portal to the Twitterverse.
I decided to try some micro blogging on it and treat it like a bit of an online journal, but that just felt too boring, too blah. If I ‘m just writing that I ‘m going to take a shower or clean my desk, why bother writing it at all? It ‘d be interesting to look back at what I did over the last week, but probably just for me. Or it ‘d be downright depressing if all my tweets just said ‘playing Team Fortress 2 ‘ again and again and again.
I also gave the whole ‘asking questions ‘ thing a shot. There were a couple of things I just couldn ‘t google that had to do with some reviews I was working on. I asked questions and gave the community a couple of days, but nobody tweeted to my rescue. To be fair, they were pretty far-out and specific questions, but that ‘s why I thought Twitter would be the best place to find an answer.
So what I ‘ve found myself doing on the iPhone is just stalking people like Stephen Fry and Greg Grunberg since they tend to update like crazy, and it ‘s interesting to see what they ‘re up to. When Stephen Fry makes a cup of tea it ‘s somehow infinitely more exciting than the cold, Earl Grey beside me.
I think it might be about high time for Twinkle to give up the ghost, though. Three or four months with the app and I still haven ‘t ever gotten into the swing of things, and in the spirit of Patrick ‘s recent clean-up it ‘s probably time to hit the ol ‘ x button over Twinkle. It ‘s become this thing I check when I ‘m bored and it ‘s a real time waster that I just don ‘t find very fulfilling. The people I do know on Twitter (like the folks on JAMM/JAiB) are easily reachable by other means, so I think I ‘ll be better off with one less online thingamabob to check.
What about you folks, what uses have you found for Twinkle/whatever Tweeting App? I remember Brandon tweeting about how he thought Facebook was obsolete —
