The other big problem with Twinkle for me is that it ties all its location and other elements to your *Tapulous* (the developer) account, rather than directly to your Twitter account. To me, that was always a dumb move, and still is. It’s a Twitter client – it should be entirely based on your Twitter account. It should show *Twitter users* nearby, not Tapulous Twinkle users nearby.

I personally enjoy learning more about people but don’t have enough time to explain what Facebook and Twitter are to those who maybe don’t really get it.

If you do not have lots of people who (a) are local and (b) are using Twinkle – then the app is not much use.

Second, I found Twitterlocal was a great resource to find people in my state to Twitter with. I have probably half a dozen people who I follow and it’s nice to have the same things to comment on whether it is state politics, weather, etc.

Third, I think once you forget about trying to attract followers or how many you have that Twitter becomes a lot more fun.

Grab a copy of the Twhirl beta and you can have searches appear in your Twitter stream as well as update to Ping.fm.

I’ve given up explaining Twitter to people. My biggest use now is as a way to update Facebook and all my other social media sites. I am twitter.com/mas90guru and I’m not sure if I’m following everyone on this comment thread but if you find me I will follow back.

This app was “too much” and took some time to update tweets. I now use TwittFon and I love it. As a side note, I really don’t know why people pay for twittie when twittfon does the exact same thing.

Second, you can’t compare twitter to the status update of facebook. It’s completely different. Twitter is not about telling people that you’re taking a shower or grocery shopping. It’s about learning about what others think, read, watch, etc… In this sense, it is important that you follow people you look up to.

None of my friends are on twitter. None! They don’t get the thing! I do follow about 80 people because they tweet interesting stuff, links, etc…

I also kinda made new “friends” on twitter, hooked up with advertisers for my blog, and learned a bunch about different topics. Now I see twitter as an extension to my RSS feed reader. That’s one of the first things I do in the morning after email and news.

Don’t give up on twitter!! Just switch to TwittFon!

Oh, and you can follow me at http://twitter.com/sebastienpage

Definitely get a desktop client as well (I like Twhirl, but there are plenty of choices out there).

I also still believe the very best advice about Twitter (and social networking in general) came from Robert Scoble. He has always preached that what you get out of these services is all about following smart people, as they’ll help make you smarter – not at all about getting folks to follow you. Scoble is ‘noisy’ but he’s great to follow because he talks to tons of very smart people, and tweets about cool new stuff. Follow people whose sites you like, who you think are smart (like Stephen Fry) and it should get more interesting.

Alright, that’s true. Maybe I’m not following enough folks. I’ll give it a shot soon and I’ll see if I can’t find another app or desktop client to try out.

the local people i follow has been really great for making new contacts/friends. there are alot of tweetups organized where twitter users arrange to meet a bar, cafe, ballgame, etc. the trick is, however, to follow lots of local people.

another thing about twitter is that i’m thinking limiting it to one device/client is probably limiting your interraction with it. twinkle is a great client and has a great built in feature to find local tweeps, but you will miss alot of tweets if you only check your phone. also, there are other clients that allow searching, can organize followers into groups, etc, etc.

my suggestion is to take another week or two, install a desktop client and follow at least 25 – 50 local twitters and follow at least 25 – 50 iphone enthusiast worldwide. there will be alot of noise at first, but see what you think. btw, i’m http://twitter.com/johnellis
