Fliq Tasks for iPhone = Very Nice, But Needs More Sync Options

Fliq Tasks is quite a nice new iPhone app that helps you manage your tasks and to-do items. It’s got a clean and attractive interface, and looks quite promising.

I’ve played with it a little last night and today, and it’s certainly easy and pleasant to work with. I believe a good user interface makes all the difference with programs of this type (and really with all types of apps).

My current favorite tasks application is Things, because I *love* its elegant, clean interface on both the iPhone and the desktop (mac only unfortunately), and its slick, painless wireless syncing. I’ve tried other task manager apps that may be more powerful or feature-rich, but they always end up outsmarting me – they’re too clever, too packed with features, maybe even too organized.

Fliq interests me as a possible alternative to Things – not that I’m looking, just always interested in tasks apps as I’m a big list maker, and always have plenty of tasks I haven’t got to yet – maybe I’m doing it wrong. 🙂

But … the one big thing Fliq Tasks is lacking right now, for my needs, is a better set of sync options. At the moment, you can grab a free trial (public preview) of their upcoming Fliq 1.1 version of desktop software, which offers an ability to share tasks, but only with iCal.

I’ve never liked using calendar programs for task management – in my experience they’re never flexible enough (they’re doing tasks very much as a sideline after all), my (usually large) list of current tasks never fits in a Week or even Day view well, and so on.

I want a to-do app to sync either with its own desktop client, or with other leading specialist tasks apps (like Things or Omnifocus on the desktop, or Remember The Milk or Toodledo via the web). I hope that Mark/Space may offer more options by the time the public preview runs out. It would be a shame if they don’t, as most everything else about Fliq Tasks is very cool so far. Even the tasks sharing feature is wireless and easy to use from within the iPhone app – it’s just the iCal part that is a let down for me.

The good news is that if you’re not one for syncing your tasks and just want to manage them on the iPhone only, or if you’re fine with iCal as a sync partner, then I’d say this app looks quite sharp and well worth a try.

Mark/Space also has two other Fliq apps available now for iPhone – Fliq and Fliq Notes, and with these you can share contacts, notes, and photos wirelessly with the desktop Fliq application for Mac or Windows.

Fliq Tasks – and the other two Fliq iPhone apps – are available in the App Store now, and are free apps. The Mark/Space desktop products – Fliq for Mac and Fliq for Windows – are $19.95.
