Jailbreak Apps: ClearCam

There’s been a bit of flurry of new jailbreak apps over the last couple of weeks that fall into the ‘make you want to jailbreak’ sort of category. We’ve had a couple of very promising sounding copy&paste solutions recently, and today’s new entry in this category is ClearCam – which promises to let you turn your 2MP photos into 4MP photos.

It does so by ‘stitching 6 normal photos into one super photo’. Here’s some more detail on this from Gizmodo’s earlier post on this:

Similar to the manner in which Gigapan created the 1474MP image of the inauguration, Occipital’s ClearCam works its magic by creating a composite image using 6 iPhone photos taken in succession. This allows the photo to have the resolution of a 4MP image. And since the UI has infinite multitouch scale, you can zoom in as far as you want (a bit gimmicky, yes, but I did the zoom gesture 50 times, and it took 50 pinches to get the photo back to original resolution).

Adrian at Gizmodo has some good information on file sizes you’ll get with ClearCam (roughly double a normal image), and how the higher resolution pics do not appear to be substantially higher quality when viewed at normal size – though improvements are clear in certain areas like sharpness of text and elimination of blur.

ClearCam is available via Cydia on jailbroken iPhones. It’s a 15-day trial version – the full version is priced at $10.
