Hot on the heels of Gmail Tasks on the iPhone, today’s new bit of Google iPhone goodness is Google Books. I’ve just discovered this via a post from Andy Ihnatko, and given it a very quick look.
I’ve never really paid any attention to the Google Books project, but apparently it now encompasses some 1.5 million pubic domain texts.
And now all of those texts are available on the iPhone (and mobiles in general) via the Google Books Mobile page, which is at:
From just a quick nose around, the site does seem to have an awful lot of good content, from well-known authors (and some lesser known too). You can check out featured titles, or browse by category, or just search for something specific you’re after.
Once you find a book that grabs you, you can select it and read it right there within the Safari browser. It offers a very basic reader for now – with just some search / contents / switch chapters / go back home type navigation at the very top of the page, but it’s certainly usable.
Lack of any offline ability means this is no competitor for some of the leading eBook apps out there right now – but it sure would be interesting to see Google integrate this and Google Tasks into their Google Mobile app …
